TO TEXT OR WHEN NOT TO TEXT, THAT IS THE QUESTION.
TO TEXT OR WHEN NOT TO TEXT, THAT IS THE QUESTION.
REMEMBER TO SCROLL DOWN PAST P.S. TO FIND OUT INFORMATION ON OUR LIVE SHOW TODAY!
Of course, in today’s world, anyone who has access to a cell phone is going to text. Too easy not to!
Texting was created in the early 90s as a way to quickly communicate a short amount of information like “I’ll meet you at 5 or I’m picking up the kids today.”
Nowadays people are using texts like they are getting ready to publish a book or to hide behind the written word vs speaking them.
It still comes up on occasion and by mistake when someone emails and uses all caps whereby the receiver invariably misinterprets the message as believing the sender is angry or yelling at them.
So, can text become a very sloppy way of communicating and lead to misunderstandings? You bet ‘cha!
Just recently a person who was a lifelong friend ended our relationship with a text…actually, a few of them came across as cold, cut, and dry. It was a foolish way to convey one’s feelings and led to some very hurtful ones but somehow my friend decided to take what he thought was the easy way out of confrontation.
Texts can act as a double-edged sword…with finesse and determination of leading with loving kindness, one may “get by” by using it in storyline form however without being conscious of the wording it can be damaging.
Then there's the other side of the sword:
* It's fast and efficient
* Great way to save a reference number or link
* Reaching out to more than one person; Reaching out to say hi
* Sending pictures
* Use for payment reminders
* My niece texts me, my sister, and her father every morning to check0in and make sure we're still breathing
* ETC.
Then there are moments of fun! I usually use the microphone and I have come up with some very humorous auto-correcting that depends on the receiver I sent or edited before pressing send. One that I saw in one of those Text Faux Pas books was:
“I heard Mom got stung by bees. Is she okay? In hospital?”
“She’s okay, no hospital. She had to take a deep penis.”
“Uh, what?’
“I had to inject her with an Epic Penis.”
“Oh for Christ’s sake!”
“Epi-Pen.”
My girlfriend Randy used to stand at a novelty store and read them to each other and enjoy really big belly laughs until we had tears. Such fun!
With text, we can make our lives more streamlined and yet if not paying attention we can create unnecessary incidents. We all know that texts can be:
* Distracting
* Cause emotional misinterpretations (you never know what mood the receiver is in)
* Be impersonal
* Manifest misunderstandings
* Cause accidents while driving and texting
* Make your blood pressure rise because of feeling the need for an immediate response
* Generate bad posture like what chiropractors are referring to as text neck syndrome
* ETC.
So, it’s always a good thing to give pause to stale text behaviors and change something up to benefit you and the recipient going forward. Maybe think about when you have something important to say go the old-fashioned way, pick up the phone and bring a voice(s) into the equation.
Lastly, texting can take you away from experiencing the world around you. Most of the time for many of us learning not to obsessively text is important for our peace of mind. When you are waiting for someone or something instead of putting your face into the screen try some of these:
* Look around
* Smile at someone
* Sincerely find joy in your surroundings
* See what new clothing styles are coming about
* Lookup
* Feel what it’s like to experience gratefulness
With so many more options to experience this lovely, short life we are given to take advantage of sharing yourself, mind/body/soul with the world.
