3 simple exercises to start getting out of your box
Twenty years ago I was doing my 8 day intensive for a certification in spiritual psychology. During one of the processes we were being asked to explore what was keeping us stuck.
It was my turn to be the client and I was guided by the counselor to go deep inside where I found myself sitting in the sunlight in a beautiful garden. Birds, flowers, trees and butterflies and nature was all bountiful. However, when I was asked to look around I found that I was surrounded by walls in a castle courtyard. I couldn’t see out and most certainly no one could see in.
“What does that feel like being isolated like this?” asked my counselor. I remember responding much to my surprise that it was terribly lonely, and I yearned to be free and explore what was beyond the walls. It felt like I wasn’t breathing in the gift that was my life. I became very sad at this realization, that I had been in this place for so many years with my outlook being constricted and not the least bit expansive.
I was next asked if I wanted to redesign this scene which was followed by a resounding “YES PLEASE!” and immediately I found that my creative juices went crazy…colors, textures, designs, shapes, patterns, you name it were emerging and the walls started coming down as well as opening my castles’ drawbridge.
There was a horse waiting for me (I love to ride) and step by tentative step I found myself leaving my old residence behind with gratitude. As I got comfy on my saddle, I looked back at what was a safety net for so long and took off like there was no tomorrow…the breeze on my face, the freedom that lifted my heart, the joy of exploring the possibilities of how to be in a new life of my creation felt like heaven.
We all spend a lot of time worrying in the present about the future. And using todays world with which each of us can relate, it’s a natural reaction to freeze up from being isolated. However, our mind is not isolated; our creative juices are still available at a moments notice. So the question I would like to ask you is how do you want to use this time behind your walls to benefit your future Self?
Thinking out of our old box can be our new normal. It can be super exciting as well while you become more conscious/aware of where you want to be with your health mind/body/spirit. Allowing for less constraints and more imagination to thwart off old habits that no longer serve us is available to each one of us, now.
Dr. Wayne Dyer shared a story about being on a cruise that we have been waiting to go on for many years. However, when we look from the stern we see a barge with a super thick, strong chain attached to the ship and on that barge is our baggage.
“No matter where we go there we are”, so is where you are in life right now good enough or are there more of your gifts, dreams and talents you are willing to see and feel and enjoy by bringing down your walls?
Getting out of the box means opening to possibilities you never allowed to explore before and keeping in mind that how you were showing up before this period of time doesn’t have to be the same when coming out this isolation. An enhanced version of you is always a great gift to bring frontward.
The world may look and feel differently when we emerge from our isolation. But it’s not that our outer world has changed; the trees, sky, wind, ground, etc. will be the same but the way in which you show up for living in this new world will have changed and you want to be open, conscious and ready for it.
Where to start this new journey? Let me count the ways but let’s use the concept of baby steps and start with the following.
1. Be willing to look inside and assess the changes you want to make. Write them down and don’t judge yourself whether your list is made up of 5 or 100 wants/needs. If there are many you will know in time which ones jump off the page because they want your attention. These ideas are within you so simply allow them to flow forward.
2. Create an ideal vision where you see and feel new possibilities and that you are ready to practice making them a new belief/way of being.
3. Believe that you can create using thoughts and feelings. With the desire in your heart you can learn how to think and believe differently...out of the box!
